When the seasons change and the weather becomes crisp and cool, you might want to squeeze in one more pre-winter boating trip. But, before you hit the water, make sure to pack properly for every possible circumstance on a cold-weather boating trip.

Dress for Success

Your first step is to dress correctly for weather conditions on the boat. Bear in mind that temperatures out on the water will be several degrees colder than they are on land. So even if the weather feels comfortable at your house, you’re going to have to bundle up to take your boat out on the lake.

Dress in layers to keep yourself warm. If you get too hot, you can always take off a sweater, but you’re going to want the extra layers if things get chilly. Wicking fabrics, like wool or polyester sports clothing, are a great option. Leggings under a pair of jeans or cargo pants, along with tall waterproof boots and wool socks, will help to keep you warm and dry. Finish off the ensemble with a wool cap and fingerless gloves. You can even add a neck gaiter or scarf for some extra coziness. And, don’t forget to bring extra pairs of socks and extra sweaters in a dry bag just to be safe!

Stock Up Your Boat

You also need to make sure that you have the supplies you need for a successful day on the water.

Some items that can make your boat trip safer and more comfortable are:

  • Thermoses of hot coffee and/or soup.
  • High-energy snacks like granola bars, beef jerky, cheese, nuts and sandwiches.
  • First-aid kit stocked with bandages, ointments, painkillers, gauze and tweezers.
  • A multi-tool or pocket knife.
  • GPS unit.
  • Compass and laminated map.
  • Solar phone charger or battery pack.
  • Life jackets for all passengers.
  • Dry bag to store valuables and clothing.

Exercise Caution

Make sure you let someone back home know where you’re going, how long you anticipate being gone, and when you plan to return.

When it comes to boating, the rule is safety first. Especially during the colder months, if some kind of accident occurs while you’re out on the water, timing is essential and can mean the difference between life and death. Check-in with this friend or relative periodically to let them know you’re okay. If you fail to check in, they will at least have a ballpark location for you so that you can be rescued.
