What To Do (And Not Do) On Your Fall Boating Excursion

Sep. 14 2018 News By American Marine Admin

Fall is right around the corner and with cooler mornings comes frigid waters. But just because the weather is starting to turn doesn't mean you have to store your boat just yet; in fact, boating in the fall is one of the best experiences as an amateur sailor.

Recreational boating was one of the top hobbies in America as of 2015. If you want to extend your hobby into the fall, here's what you should and shouldn't do when you go boating.

Look for deals

Summer is peak boating season and that means you're likely to get better deals as people pack up and go home for the fall. Before you pull your custom boat on the water, however, look around for used boat equipment or clearance events to stock up your marine vessel. You might be able to get a great deal on boat accessories.

Bring an extra layer

Cold, dewy mornings and dense, cooler evenings; fall brings beautiful weather during the day, but chillier conditions at night. On top of that, the water is also going to start to cool down. Even if the day is hot, it might be a little too cold to go for a September swim. If you bring your custom boat on the water, be sure to stock up with an extra sweater or two. It might seem weird to bring a winter beanie, but a knit cap might also save your ears some pain if you like to fish in the morning.

Check your life preservers every morning

If you're wearing layers, you have to ensure that your life jacket fits over your clothing comfortably. On top of that, cheaper inflatable boating accessories might lose air when the weather cools, making them less effective. Invest in better flotation gear and don't be afraid to stock up on emergency supplies.

Watch the weather

Keep up to date on the weather forecast and never go out onto large bodies of water if a storm is on the way. Autumn can bring unpredictable weather, especially at the end of hurricane season. Even if your family boat is sturdy, you can still get flung overboard by a fierce wind or strong wave.

Autumn brings the beautiful views and solitude you simply can't get from a summer excursion. When you want to bring your custom boats onto the water, remember these tips and tricks to staying safe this autumn.
